82 Dead in China Mine Blast: Putin, Zhaparov Send Condolences

(MENAFN) World leaders have begun offering their condolences to China after a devastating gas explosion tore through a coal mine in northern Shanxi province on Friday, claiming at least 82 lives.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov each sent separate telegrams to Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday, expressing grief over the tragedy and solidarity with those affected.

"Please convey my sympathy and support to the families of the deceased miners, as well as my best wishes for a speedy recovery to all those injured," Putin said, according to the Kremlin.

Zhaparov said he learned "with deep sorrow" about the loss of life caused by the explosion.

"On behalf of the people of the Kyrgyz Republic and on my own behalf, I express my sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, sharing their grief at their loss, and I also wish a speedy recovery to all those injured," Zhaparov said, according to the Kyrgyz presidential press service.

The blast struck Friday evening at the Liushenyu coal mine in Qinyuan county, with 247 workers underground at the moment of the explosion, a state news agency reported Saturday.

Emergency teams remain on-site as rescue operations press on for workers still unaccounted for, while authorities work to determine the full scale of the disaster. A formal investigation into the cause of the explosion has been opened.
